lisbon & sintra, on a slower clock.

tiled walls, fado on a wednesday, the atlantic at the end of every street. then a half-hour train into the hills and the whole country changes character. notes from a week split between two cities that share a region.

/ arrival

lisbon's airport is twenty minutes from the city by metro — €1.65, runs every five. uber and bolt are cheap and reliable if you have luggage. the airport metro line ends at saldanha; one transfer to baixa-chiado puts you in the old city in under forty minutes total.

  • taberna da rua das floreschiado · seven tables, daily chalkboard, no reservations. line forms at 7.
  • manteigariachiado / time out market · pastel de nata, hot from the oven, dusted with cinnamon. €1.40, eat standing.

the sintra day.

/ leave at 8am, return for dinner

sintra is a half-hour train from rossio station — €2.30, runs every twenty minutes. don't try to do it in an afternoon; the hills swallow time. start at quinta da regaleira (gardens, the initiation well) before the bus tours arrive, take the 434 up to pena palace, walk down through the moorish castle. eat lunch at tascantiga in the village. be on the train back by six.

“in lisbon you eat in the dark blue evening; in sintra you eat in the morning mist. the country between them is the same country, just shown twice.”

getting there.

tap (portugal's flag carrier) runs the cheapest non-stop fares from the us east coast — jfk, ewr, bos, mia all under $300 round-trip in shoulder season. mistake fares from new york dip to $212 once or twice a year (set an alert). avoid june through august; the city stays the same temperature but the prices double and the lines triple.

small rules.

the bread on the table is not free. nod, accept it, or push it back; both are normal. tipping is rounding up. the metro stops at 1am; ubers fill the gap. the seven hills are real — pack shoes you can climb in. don't try to drive in the city; do drive once you leave it.

final thoughts.

lisbon is the rare european capital that never quite became expensive. that is changing. go now, stay a day longer than you planned, do the sintra trip on a tuesday. order the percebes even though they look like nothing you would eat; that's the point of the place.
